Terror Australis

Terror Australis positions the digital in relation to a mythology of malevolence within the Australian landscape. The project comprises a series of short films which cast the natural environment as a character of sinister potential. Through a repetitive process of digital augmentation Terror Australis explores the transitory space between rural towns; the non-site made present through a disquieting strangeness.

Architectural Composition with Backyard enlarges and splits Wladyslaw Strzeminski’s 1929 Architectural Composition 13c to include the actual space of the Marrickville Garage backyard in the image. One aim is to make more overt the spatial concerns that are at least implied in early twentieth century abstract work. These concerns are written about by Strzeminski and his artist-partner Katarzyna Kobro in their unizm spatial theorising. In re-making their work nearly a century later I am attempting to collapse some of the temporal gulf we have with them while expanding the spatial implications of their work to take account of the greater urgency that spatial concerns now have.
