Part of dealing with loss is the acknowledgement that there are some things that can never be recovered. In this non figurative self-performance, “I’m Sitting With You, but, You’re Not There”, Tawale investigates emotional responses of loss and regret through intuitive drawing. Wounded by loss the drawing stands in for the artist’s sense of emptiness, unable to recover from regrets of the past.
Salote Tawale was born in Suva, Fiji Islands and grew up in the south eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia. Tawale has been a lecturer and tutor in Photomedia and studio practice at Monash, Deakin Universities and at UNSW. In 2016 she completed a Masters of Visual Art at Sydney College of the Arts, University of Sydney.
