Emerging artists paradoxically face a career in a highly competitive field as a professional whilst at the same time potentially running at a loss. Working as an artist may be seen, optimistically, as an investment. By generating money from an alternate source of income, this is in turn used to produce artwork. Acting professional, while being unable to produce a sufficient income on art practice alone underscores the definition itself, as a kind-of ‘faux-professionalism’.

The work of Cheleski, Cumming and Quinteros is brought together to examine the aesthetic, conceptual and technical values that are inherent in their work, and how they relate to ideals of the art market, promotion and refined aesthetic of a fetishistic art object.

A Sound Investment ruminates on the relationship between professionalism and the self-funded forays of emerging art practice, revealing the artists’ hyper-awareness of the conditions of art production and the question of what constitutes as professional.

Brenda Factor
Hookish, 2013
Silicone, screws on MDF
Brenda Factor is a Sydney based visual artist and designer. Moving from large-scale inflatables to small-scale wearable pieces, Brenda’s practice is very broad and defies categorisation.

Brenda completed a Master of Fine Arts at the College of Fine Arts (UNSW) in 2009, before working as a sessional lecturer in CoFA’s Jewellery Department.  In 2011 she set up SquarePeg Studios in Newtown and achieved a long held dream to develop a supportive, creative and vibrant space for contemporary jewellers in Sydney. She is now devoting her time to making SquarePeg Studios as fabulous as possible, while at the same time not losing touch with her own art productions.
